VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Urgent and Important Matter on the Recent Census Result

Rt. Hon. Speaker Sir,

Honorable Members,

In accordance with the provision of Regulation No. 40 of the Conduct of Business Regulations of Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly, 2005; please allow me to humbly present an Urgent and Important Matter regarding disputed results of the Fifth Sudan Household and population Census, which was released  on the 21st May, 2009 by the National Central Bureau of Statistics  in Khartoum. The results put the population of the Southern Sudan to 8,260,490. In a sense Southern Sudan represents 21% of the entire population of the Sudan. How much of this true?

According to the results published, males in Southern Sudan are more than females as males’ population amount to four million while women constitute three million. The Census outcome contradicts practicality and gender ratio phenomenon in the Sudan. As a known fact in Southern Sudan, average male is married at least to three wives and fathers a minimum of 12 children. Bearing this fact in mind men can’t be more than women.

If the figures of the census’ results were true, could average men be married to three wives each?

At the outlook of our Universities, Churches, traditional, etc the ratio of male to female is most often 1:14. This means that men are fewer in number than women. Therefore, there is no way that a reasonable person could consider census collected date to have been subjected to correct analysis and in a good faith.

For the interest of the Southern Sudan in particular and Sudan in general the august House should consider the following recommendations.

  1. Since the 5th Sudan Household and population census was doctored and flawed, the august House should reject the census result or invalidate its use of application as a mechanism for power and wealth sharing in Southern Sudan.
  2. Southern Sudan should at least maintain the 1/3 of the entire population of Sudan on basis of power and wealth sharing.
  3. The august House should make an appeal to the National Assembly in Khartoum to invalidate the census results and its application as basis for power and wealth sharing.

Thank you for taking time to listen to me

Thanks

Hon. Wol Deng Atak
Deputy Chairperson of Public Services and Administrative Reform
